JUST ADDED ON 12/07 - THE BATTLE OF PORT REPUBLIC / JACKSON'S VALLEY CAMPAIGN - Burnside Carbine Bullet & .69 Caliber Round Ball
A flat base Burnside Carbine bullet and a .69 caliber round ball that were recovered from the Port Republic battlefield. These relics come from the collection of Wilbur Bedall, a thirty year relic hunter who amassed a large collection of artifacts and carefully recorded the location of recovery for the items that he found. The Battle of Port Republic, fought on June 9, 1862, occurred the day after Stonewall Jackson's victory at Cross Keys and featured an impressive flank attack which ultimately forced the Union Army under Shields to retreat. The two armies suffered almost 2000 casualties, or about 20% of the forces engaged. Jackson's Valley Campaign demonstrated the ability of the general and ultimately allowed him to reinforce General Lee outside of Richmond as the Union Army in the Valley, after stinging defeats, had been placed on the defensive. A provenance letter will be included.
