JUST ADDED ON 12/14 - THE BATTLE OF PIEDMONT - .54 Caliber Confederate Gardner Bullet
A .54 caliber Gardner bullet that was recovered from the Piedmont battlefield. This bullet comes from the collection of Wilbur Bedall, a thirty year relic hunter who amassed a large collection of artifacts and carefully recorded the location of recovery for the items that he found. The Battle of Piedmont, fought on June 5, 1864, was the result of Ulysses S. Grant's plan to pressure the Confederates in Virginia at multiple points in order to keep them from easily shifting reinforcements. Confederate General William "Grumble" Jones was killed during the intense fighting just north of the village of Piedmont in the Shenandoah Valley. The Confederate army was routed allowing Union General Shields to occupy Staunton. A provenance letter will be included.
