JUST ADDED ON 2/16 - SIEGE OF PETERSBURG - Heavy Brass Buckle - Probably a Confederate Belt Buckle
This heavy brass frame buckle was recovered at Petersburg. Although it is not a standard type that is associated with Confederate use as a belt buckle, I feel pretty certain that is how it was used. It measures 2 7/8 inches in width, is 2 3/8 inches on the vertical, and the frame is 1/4 inch thick. There is a gutter on the back and you can see the indentation on the front from where the tongue set into the frame. It certainly is the right size and weight to have been a belt buckle and I feel pretty confident that it is. This is the first time that this artifact has been offered for public sale having come directly from the relic hunter's collection. A provenance letter will be included.
