JUST ADDED ON 5/16 - 7TH SOUTH CAROLINA CAMP / CAMP WASHINGTON / FAIRFAX, VA. - Soldier Carved Lead Pencil - with Relic Hunter's Original Label
This clearly appears to be a soldier carved lead pencil (2 inches long), although I am not sure how the relic hunter knew it was a .54 caliber bullet unless that is what they primarily found in the camp. According to the original handwritten label, it was recovered in the camp of the 7th South Carolina Infantry - Camp Washington - near Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia. About eight years ago, I walked into the Horse Soldier at Gettysburg and found that they had just added a group of artifacts with original collector's labels to one of the shelves. Since I am interested in items with good provenance, I picked out the relicss that I thought were most unique. I just rediscovered this group, so I am offering them in today's update. The Horse Soldier's inventory number is written on the back of the label. A provenance letter will be included.
