JUST ADDED ON 9/21 - THE BATTLE OF MONOCACY - A Fired Washington Arsenal Bullet Recovered in 1970 - from a Relic Hunter's Old Boxed Collection
This nice example of a fired Washington Arsenal bullet (star in the cavity) comes out of a box that was labeled "Monocacy - Possible Area where 400 Federal Troops Captured en Masse" with the three dates in 1970 when the relics were found in 1970. I have included a photo of the original box, but this box is not included with the relic. It comes from the collection of a Maryland relic hunter who stored everything that he found in small cardboard boxes that were carefully labeled with the location where they came from. Monocacy, sometimes called "The Battle that Saved Washington," was an important 1864 battle that delayed the approach of Jubal Early's Confederate army towards an essentially undefended capital. There were two block houses on the battlefield - both were part of the Union defenses. This is the first time that this relic has been offered to the public for sale having come fresh out of the relic hunter's estate. A provenance letter with the relic hunters name will be included.
